ACTION FOR THE GREAT SANDY STRAIT!

The proposed Colton coal mine is located in the catchment upstream of the Great Sandy Marine Park and the Fraser Coast, and just 2km from the township of Aldershot which is home to over 1,000 people.

The mine poses major risks to both the Great Sandy Strait and to the health and wellbeing of the residents of Aldershot.

The current mine proposal poses a major risk to the future of the Great Sandy Strait and the Great Sandy Marine Park, through:

  1. The proposed discharge of untreated waste water directly into the Mary River estuarine system. The discharge will include water contaminated with a range of heavy metals and suspended solids.
  2. The establishment of waste water storage dams onsite that pose a risk of leakage or over-topping, particularly during high rainfall events
  3. The proposal to leave a large, unfilled final void (or hole) after mining that is at risk of over-topping during rain events or leaching polluted wastewater.

The people of Aldershot will be forced to live with dangerous coal dust and heavy industrial noise.  The township is entirely dependent on tank water collected from their rooves for drinking, and they are worried about the impacts of coal dust pollution on their drinking water.
