Mr Hunt: Protect our Water Resources

Australia now has a law that is supposed to protect water resources from large coal mines and coal seam gas projects, but a law is only as effective as the Minister applying it. Greg Hunt last week decided to apply this new law to 27 coal mines and gas projects in NSW and Queensland of the 47 eligible projects. Some of the worst projects are still in limbo, and we still don’t know if he’ll use the law to actually protect groundwater aquifers and drinking water catchments.

Proposed mines in the Galilee Basin, Liverpool Plains and the NSW Central Coast will cause huge damage to our precious water resources and farming communities across NSW and Queensland.

Minister Greg Hunt will be making a decision on the Galilee Basin mines in the coming weeks. We need you to write to him and call for him to use the law to protect the lifeblood of rural communities, starting by rejecting the Galilee Basin mines, and then doing the same for damaging coal and gas proposals everywhere.

Tell Minister Hunt: don't mine our water resources

Environment Minister Greg Hunt will make decisions on the water impacts of 47 coal and gas projects in the coming weeks.

Water is our most precious resource: it is our lifeblood. The damage to aquifers, rivers and catchments that coal mining and coal seam gas extraction can cause, calls for precautionary decision making and a readiness to say “no” to major mining projects if it is found that they will have unacceptable impacts on this irreplaceable resource.

Tell Minister Hunt that water is more precious than coal or gas. We must protect our aquifers and groundwater. Send an email below, or give his office a call on (02) 6277 7920.
