Dear Environment Minister Plibersek,

I write to you to urge you to reject Whitehaven’s Winchester South Coal mine, and protect important koala Habitat and our climate.

The Queensland Coordinator-General recently recommended that Whitehaven’s Winchester South coal mine be approved, so it is now up to you to stop this disastrous project.

The dire environmental impacts of this project include:

- Clearing 2,000 hectares of threatened species habitat including koala, ornamental snake and squatter pigeon. The coordinator general’s assessment identified more koala habitat than Whitehaven originally noted.

- Drain local groundwater at an average of 155 million litres each year, with a potential maximum rate of 280 million litres each year into the mine pits.

- Leave three un-rehabilitated pit voids (giant holes where mining has occurred) at the end of the mine's life. These pits will continue to drain water from the surrounding area and concentrate heavy metals and salts in the voids.

- Emit a massive 583 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution, This is more than the entire annual GHG emissions of Australia.

Whitehaven has a long history of being recalcitrant environmental vandals. Their criminal rap sheet spans several pages with over a decade of fines and convictions for wanton destruction, pollution and outright disregard for the land upon which they operate.

Some of the highlights of this list include being found guilty of stealing water at the height of the worst drought in living memory, illegally clearing bushland, contaminating local waterways and disturbing Aboriginal artefacts.

Allowing this company to operate in NSW was a mistake that many communities and much wildlife have suffered from, allowing them to expand into Queensland knowing now how they operate would be an even larger mistake.

Please stand up for koala habitat and our environment and make the right decision and reject this coal mine.
