I am writing to you to express my opposition to the proposed changes to our environmental assessment system particularly where they reduce community participation and WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) independence, and weaken protections. I urge you to scrap the changes and instead strengthen WA’s nature laws and the independence of the EPA.

I am a concerned Western Australian who deeply values nature, a safe climate and our distinctive way of life - which hinges on our environment’s health. Western Australia is home to magnificent landscapes, unique wildlife, and globally significant biodiversity. But the nature we love is in serious trouble.

WA’s plants, animals, and ecosystems are facing increasing threats from climate change, deforestation, fossil fuel expansion, industrialisation and pollution.
 
Threats to nature jeopardise the lifestyles and livelihoods that are central to our identity as West Aussies - from family camping trips to surfing and hiking, to fishing, farming, and tourism. These places we love are sadly in decline.

As we confront the challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change, it is more important than ever to strengthen our nature laws to protect our environment.

I am aware that governments are under pressure from powerful Western Australian-based corporations and vested interests to weaken critically important nature laws. I urge you to resist these short-sighted attacks that are driven by the desire for more private profit.

I am alarmed in particular by the proposed changes to the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). These changes threaten to further weaken the protections that are crucial for safeguarding our environment, including transparency, community participation rights and the EPA’s independence. We must stop the erosion of the WA EPA and strengthen State nature laws to prevent further harm to our natural heritage.

Without a strong, well-resourced EPA, fossil fuel expansion could run rampant in this state without thorough, science-based, robust scrutiny and assessment of impacts - especially in the Kimberley region where fracking companies are every day pushing to industrialise this iconic region. We cannot allow pristine Kimberley landscapes, precious groundwater, and rich cultural heritage to be devastated by a fracking industry.

Oil and gas industry royalties contributes a mere 1.3% to state government revenue, less than half of what WA drivers pay in vehicle registration fees - according to new research from The Australia Institute - all while harming our environment and climate, and siphoning profits to a greedy few.

They employ scant workers in their highly automated - low workforce operations, with just 0.7% of the state’s workforce employed in oil and gas extraction. This is not an industry to let run rampant in WA.

The decisions you make on the environment will profoundly shape the world we leave for our children and grandchildren.

I urge you to take decisive action to defend WA’s nature. Our environment and our quality of life are irreplaceable, and too precious to lose.
