Dear Mr Merrick/Ms Trad,

I’m writing in relation to the Adani’s draft Groundwater Dependent Ecosystem Management Plan.

The Plan should not be considered by the Department of Environment and Science unless or until Adani have conducted the research recommended by the Federal Government in the Springs Assessment report for the Lake Eyre Basin.

Specifically, I’m writing to ask that you inform Adani that you will not be making a decision on their draft Groundwater Dependent Ecosystem Management Plan unless they:

1.      Conduct a high resolution seismic survey in and around the Doongmabulla Springs to identify faults within the underlying geological strata [4] and
2.      Sink a nest of deep bores to the base of each formation to the west of the springs to better inform pressure head and thus provide more information on source aquifers [5].

All of this information should then be made publicly available and provided to independent experts to assess the results of the research.

The Doongmabulla Springs are an extraordinary complex of 160 wetlands in a dry landscape, and it is completely unacceptable to put them at risk due to lack of information.

The recommendations on the research that is needed has come from the Federal Bioregional Assessment process which has expended millions of dollars and was designed to better assess the risks of mining on water resources.

It would be an abject failure on your part if you were to ignore these recommendations and would amount to a terrible waste of money which puts some of our most precious environmental assets at risk.

I would also like to request that you delay a decision on Adani’s Management Plan until the full investigation into alleged illegal drilling of groundwater bores has been completed.
