Stand with Micklo

The Kimberley region has been identified as one of the most prospective regions in the world for shale and tight gas production. Estimates suggest that up to 40,000 gas wells could be drilled and fracked if the industry goes ahead in the region.

The Kimberley region has been identified as one of the most prospective regions in the world for shale and tight gas production. Estimates suggest that up to 40,000 gas wells could be drilled and fracked if the industry goes ahead in the region.

Buru Energy have plans to frack for tight gas at Yulleroo, 70 kilometres east of Broome, in the Kimberley this year. Micklo Corpus, a Broome community member & Yawuru Traditional Owner, has taken a determined stand against Buru's fracking plans. Micklo and his family and supporters have been camped out on Crown land at Yulleroo, for the last 10 months.

So far, Micklo has kept Buru Energy at bay. But now the Department of Lands is trying to evict Micklo from his camp at Yulleroo. Two weeks ago they issued Micklo with a letter demanding that he move from the site within 8 days or they would take action against him. However, Micklo has said he is not going anywhere.

Micklo has asked for support in his effort to protect country from fracking. Will you stand with Micklo?

Do not remove Micklo

The Canning Basin in the Kimberley has more estimated gas than the whole of the East Coast of Australia. Experts have estimated that there could be more than 40,000 gas fracking wells in the Kimberley if the industry is allowed to proceed to full production

Local community group Frack Free Kimberley have been working hard to get a moratorium on fracking in this iconic region. One community member and Yawuru Traditional Owner, Micklo Corpus, has been camped at a proposed fracking site, Yulleroo, and keeping Buru Energy at bay for a year and a half.

Last year the Department of Lands moved to evict Micklo - they issued him with a letter demanding that he move from the site. People mobilised and over 7,500 emails were sent to WA Premier Colin Barnett calling on him to allow Micklo to be on his country. The Department of Lands backed down.

Just two weeks ago, the Shire of Broome issued Micklo with an order to remove his camp. Last week the Minister for Lands got in on the act and he has been told to move his camp or the Shire will bulldoze it at a cost of $26,000.

Please send a short email to the Shire of Broome an the Minister for Lands. They can withdraw their notice which will allow Micklo to stay on his country and carry out his cultural responsibilities of looking after land and water.
