Reject BHP’s destructive coal mine
To the Honourable Murray Watt and the Australian Department of Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water I urge you to reject BHP’s Saraji East coal mine (EPBC 2016/7791). I heard that you said on ABC radio that “these days, it’s very rare for a new coal project to be approved.” Coal mines have a devastating impact on our water, wildlife and climate. Coal mines should never be approved. I consider that the impacts of the Saraji East mine on matters that ought to be protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, including koalas, greater gliders and water resources, are completely unacceptable. New and expanded coal mines have no place in Australia’s future, especially when the coal mine will also destroy massive areas of koala and greater glider habitat and suck up even more of our water. The 328 million tonnes of carbon that will be released into our atmosphere from Saraji East will have irreversible impacts on protected plants and animals, the Great Barrier Reef and our water resources. This huge amount of emissions will impact the survival of iconic Australian species. Consider also the social and economic impacts from climate change that we are already feeling, and that will be exacerbated by this project. Australians are feeling the heat – and climate change is also driving up the cost of living. The social and economic impacts of Saraji East do not stack up. Once again, I urge you to reject this dangerous proposal and avoid its unacceptable impacts.
