To the Honourable Scott Stewart, Minister for Resources,

Fox Resources MDL 3040 proposal for a coal mine in the Bundaberg area is completely unsuitable for the site, the community and the region. It would wreak havoc on high-value small crops, macadamia farmers, and areas of significant environmental value.

The Bundaberg area is a vital food bowl for our country, growing up to 25% of Australia’s fresh fruit and vegetables. I strongly support the farmers and local community who are vehemently opposed to this project. We cannot continue sacrificing prime cropping land and precious water supplies in Queensland to coal miners. How will we feed future generations after the mining companies have come and gone?

Just 80 kilometres south-west of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, this mine would be the most coastal coal mine in Queensland. At a time when the Great Barrier Reef is struggling with pollution and bleaching, it is unfathomable to approve a coal mine so close to it.

It would not only threaten one of Australia's largest food-producing areas but also the large underground aquifers which are the lifeblood of the local community and farmers. Fox Resources could intercept local aquifers to access this coal mine, posing a huge risk for local farmers who rely on this groundwater for food production.

Metallurgical coal has been classed as being in structural decline. The Australian government’s March 2024 Resources and Energy Quarterly (REQ) report highlights that world trade for metallurgical coal is declining, and will decline until the end of the decade as steel technology transitions away from blast furnaces.

This is not a commodity with a bright future - it is not worth risking the food bowls of future generations for.

As such this coal mine is completely unsuitable for the area and I would urge you to reject the exploration license.
