This massive production of climate-damaging coal could be set to increase if we don’t take action.

All three coal mines in the Mudgee Region have expansion plans. This is at a time when the world knows that fossil fuels must be kept in the ground.

Two of these expansion projects are currently with the Department of Planning for approval - they will produce an additional 65 million tonnes of coal and open a significantly large area for new coal exploration.

These mines are already licensed to draw a staggering 24,000 million litres (over 9,000 Olympic swimming pools) from the regional groundwater system every year.

This coal expansion cannot be supported by the NSW Government if it is to meet its Climate Change targets of 50 per cent emissions reduction on 2005 levels by 2030 and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Coal mining in the Mudgee Region is already massive with an approved annual production rate of up to 58 million tonnes. Coal operations have approval to continue until 2038 and are permitted to draw a staggering 24,000 million litres of groundwater from the landscape every year.

Coal mining must not be extended beyond this time if there is any hope of slowing climate extremes.

For NSW to meet the planned 50% emissions reduction on 2005 levels by 2030 there can be no further expansion of coal mining anywhere in the state.

The Mudgee Region currently has proposals for a major expansion in coal production with 164 square kms of undeveloped exploration areas.

If approved this would amount to a 50% expansion of the mining footprint. It is imperative that these new areas are not opened up for more coal production now, or in the future.

The Moolarben Mine Open Cut 3 project to produce an additional 40 million tonnes of coal and Ulan Mine Modification 6 to produce an additional 25 million tonnes of coal are currently with the Department of Planning and must not be approved.

Please reject all expansion of coal mining in the Mudgee Region.
