The Federal Senate has commenced a formal Inquiry into the failures of mine rehabilitation in Australia. Submissions are due by Monday 10th April.

State governments have allowed big mining giants to leave behind an almighty mess for communities to clean up – toxic waste, polluted waterways, ruined landscapes.

We need reforms right now at a national level to stop the damage and finally force mining companies to start cleaning up their own mess.

Please accept this submission to the Senate Inquiry into Rehabilitation of Mining and Resource Projects as it Relates to Commonwealth Responsibilities.
 
I am deeply concerned that there are 50,000 abandoned mines across Australia and that there has not been a single large mine fully rehabilitated in Australia over the last 25 years.
 
This is an extraordinary national scandal.
 
Financial assurances held by state governments are inadequate and mining giants are continually devising schemes to avoid their responsibilities by declaring bankruptcy or off-loading aging mines.
 
It’s obvious that state governments have failed to enforce mine rehabilitation and regional communities and the environment are bearing the brunt of that failure.
 
I want to encourage the Federal Government to demonstrate urgent national leadership on this issue.
 
Please take action to:
 
1.       Support the development of strict national mine rehabilitation standards
2.       Create a Federal Environmental Protection Agency that can enforce mine rehabilitation
3.       Ban mining companies leaving behind un-rehabilitated holes known as ‘final voids’
4.       Establish a national abandoned mines commission
5.       Require strict corporate mine rehabilitation liability reporting
