Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the assessment of the Zemira 3D Seismic Survey.

My preferred option for decision by the EPA is: Assess - Public environmental review

My reasons for this include:

Scale and size
Seismic surveys are by their very nature highly intrusive, requiring access to large areas of land. This project in particular is massive and covers 97,000 hectares, with 1000 hectares of vegetation clearing. This will have a large impact on the region.
 
Community economic and cultural impacts
Due to the size and nature of this project, it could have impacts on farmland, nature reserves, the caravan park, the wildflower tourism areas, and Aboriginal significant sites in the area. Impacts around the world from seismic testing have included structural damage to buildings, boreholes, pipes and septic tanks.

Fragmentation of habitat and biosecurity impacts
1000 hectares are to be cleared for seismic thumper trucks to pass through. This will have a large impact on the priority ecological community and the endangered plant and animal species in the area. There is also the risk of biosecurity impacts on the area, including the spread of weed infestation, and there is a fire danger risk with this being done in summer.

Air quality
The EPA must determine the risks to air quality and the greenhouse gas emissions from this process through air pollution.

Noise and traffic
The impacts span from rattling windows and structural damage from the thumper trucks, to noise pollution from the various truck movements.

The reason for surveying
Beach Energy has not ruled out fracking in this area, and there is a strong public interest in onshore gasfields. Through a Public Environmental Review, the public can learn more about the nature of the resources the company is targeting. The data that will be acquired through this survey will facilitate drilling of gas wells, whether conventional or unconventional fracking gasfields remains to be seen.

More information through a Public Environmental Review is appropriate, considering the high level of public interest in these proposed activities.
