They’ve called for the independent Net Zero Commission to be tasked with producing a dedicated report on the threat posed by coal mine expansions in NSW.

We’re adding our voice to this call - and asking that the report be tabled by end of July this year - and that major coal mine expansion approvals be paused while we wait for that information.

The NSW Joint Standing Committee on Net Zero is a multi-party committee in the NSW Parliament which has 12 members from across all political parties.

It has found, in a report released just last week, that the ‘sizeable pipeline’ of proposed coal mine expansions in NSW creates major uncertainty as to whether NSW will be able to meet climate change targets.

This committee has recommended that the Net Zero Commission produce a dedicated report on the threat posed by coal mine expansions as a matter of urgency.

I am writing to urge you to back this recommendation and to push for such a report to be completed by the end of July this year.

There is growing evidence that NSW is already well off-track to meet legislated 2030 and 2035 targets - so approving an additional 22 coal expansions currently proposed will simply make things even worse.

As the Net Zero Commission has noted, if the coal mining sector is allowed to expand without constraint, every other industry in NSW will be negatively impacted, as will NSW citizens as we face ever more extreme weather and rising costs.

I encourage you to support a dedicated report by the Net Zero Commission on the threat posed to climate change targets by coal mine expansions, as well as pushing for a pause on new coal expansions while that report is being drafted.
